Kayte

ADOPTED 3/13/04

9/16/04 New pics of Kayte and her sister, Sophia!  Kayte is doing great (and has grown up to be quite the beautiful little lady) and loves to train with her mom Anne.

3/22/04 I spoke with Anne (Kayte's mom) today and things sound great.  Kayte has shown great improvement and has actually gone for a short run, which she seemed to enjoy.  Her and Sophia are playing and establishing a relationship, since Kayte can be quite pushy.  She has a strong personality and obviously a will to survive to match.  Thanks to all who donated towards Kayte's medical expenses.  Without your support, we could not continue to care for these babies in time of need!

3/18/04 Kayte continues to improve and it looks as though she'll remain in Tucson with her mom as she fights the affects of this nasty disease.  The fact that Kayte is fully vaccinated against Parvo improves her chances of a full recovery.  She is on medication for the nausea, along with antibiotics and her food intake is restricted.  Although Kayte will be a "carrier" of the Parvo disease for at least the next three weeks, we are extremely hopeful that she will improve daily.  Please remember to vaccinate!  No vaccine offers 100% protection, but it has made a difference in the severity of the disease in Kayte's case.  We will update Kayte's progress.  Thanks to those who donated to help fray the cost of Kayte's treatment.

3/15/04  Kayte appears to me doing much better today (activity-wise).  She had a little water this morning and held that down.  This evening, she had some cottage cheese and was definitely looking for more to eat.  She will see Dr. Cohen for a recheck in the next day or so, to make sure she is getting better.  We will update after the exam.  Thanks for all your good thoughts and prayers!

Kayte (or as I called her...Tula the Catahoula) (click on pic to learn more about Kayte) was lucky enough to be adopted on 3/13/04, but became ill the next day.  Her new mom immediately made a vet appointment and found that Kayte has Parvo.  We have had Kayte since December, were very careful to have numerous blood panels done, checking for anemia (which she had earlier and was treated for).  Kayte was to be spayed on 3/7/04 and we had a blood panel done (to check her anemia) on 3/5/04...she was perfect!  We took her to the clinic on Sunday, 3/7/04 where she was spayed and recovered at her foster home until her adoption date (3/13/04).  She had a little upset stomach, but seemed fine.  Her adoptive Mom was notified of her condition, but felt she could nurse her back to health (all of us thinking it was a little "doggie flu") opposed to delaying her adoption.  Kayte went home that Saturday and was just fine.  However, on Sunday, she vomited and refused to eat.  On Monday, her "mom" took her to the Vet (at our expense) and he discovered (through testing) that she has Parvo!  We, here at AussieLads, are devastated (Vet who spayed her was notified and spoke with the Vet in Tucson and asked to be updated on Kayte's condition)!  Kayte is currently still in Tucson, being treated for Parvo by Dr. Cohen of Catalina Pet Hospital, who is quite hopeful.  If her condition does NOT improve in the next 2 days, Kayte will be returning to Phoenix for continued treatment and care.  If you would like to donate towards Kayte's (continued) treatment, please send a check to Aussielads Lethal White Aussie Rescue (Kayte), 926 W. Nido Avenue, Mesa, AZ  85210 or donate through PayPal...just click on the PayPal logo below (be sure to say it's for Kayte).  All thoughts, prayers and "paws crossed" hope to guide Kayte through a successful, speedy recovery.  If you can't donate money, we'll accept all good thoughts and prayers! (you can email her mom at mangerpuss@yahoo.com)   Kayte is a very special little girl, who finally found her forever home.  Please be sure to keep good thoughts for her Mom, too...as she is very worried!  Thanks in advance, for any help you can offer!

3/13/04  Here is Kayte with her new family, mom Anne and sister Sophia.  Sophia is deaf and Kayte is vision impaired, so they'll make a great pair.  Kayte will be living in Tucson (that's where she came from, thanks so much to Kelly Quinn of Border Collie Rescue).  Anne and Sophia are very active and run daily, so that should make a very energetic Kayte quite happy.  Everyone made the trip home safely and Kayte is settling in with her new family.  Way to go Kayte!!!  Here are a few pics of the introduction and beautiful Sophia.

DONATORS FOR KAYTE

12/28/04 Kayte is a real sweetheart who loves to play, especially with squeaky toys.  She is VERY vocal and does not hesitate to join in on any barking sessions.  Kayte has a very strong personality and would be quite a challenge for a first time adopter or someone NOT familiar with the Catahoula breed.  She can hold her own in any tug of war with the big dogs and is not easily intimidated.  Kayte appears to be vision impaired, but hears just fine, although she may not always know where the sound is coming from.  She is extremely intelligent and can figure things out quite easily.  She is not shy with humans or other dogs, and can be a little "bossy" at times, never hesitating to "yell" at the other dogs if she gets upset about something.  Kayte is quite a character and will constantly make you laugh at her antics.  She would best be suited in a home with older children and another friendly dog who enjoys "face wrestling", but would not let her get away with too much.  She does respond to "dog language", so she would need to be with another dog who would not be intimidated by her.  She is in NO way aggressive, but simply doesn't realize her own strength.  She easily understands "dog" language and will not bother the dogs who relay that message to her.  She does great in her crate and is much more comfortable being handled by humans.  When she first arrived, you could even pet her without her becoming totally excited...she is a lot calmer now and will even let you lead her around by her collar (something you could not do when she first arrived).  Kayte is currently in foster care where she plays much too roughly with the little dogs.  If you can help, at least by fostering Kayte in the right situation, please contact Lorraine with your interest, as follows.

Kayte is a Blue Merle Lethal White Catahoula female, approximately 4 1/2 months old.  Catahoula's are also a herding breed and experience the same dangers of Merle-to-Merle breeding as the Aussies.  She was turned in to Pima County Animal Control Shelter as a stray on 12/16/03.  Kayte is visually impaired (can see well enough to follow you around) and possibly may have a slight hearing impairment.  She received her first booster shot and Bordetella on 12/16/03 and Rabies vaccination on 12/19/03.  She appears to have been well taken care of until her time of abandonment.  Kelly Quinn of Arizona Border Collie Rescue in Tucson contacted us and bailed her out (she was going to be put down because of her impairments) for us.  Kristie and Paula picked her up in Tucson (from Kelly) on Sunday, December 21st.  She is currently staying with the aussielads (and Bounce, our foster) and enjoying her new adventure.

Kayte will be further evaluated during her stay with us.  She will be spayed and up-to-date on vaccinations before going to her forever home.  Kayte is very sweet and loves to "face wrestle" with the other doggies, especially Bounce.  She is crate trained and we are working on potty training (she seems to be getting of hang of it rather quickly).  Kayte is schedule for a Vet check on Saturday, 12/28/03.  Check back for more pictures.

Here are a few pictures of Kayte's arrival at our home winning over my hubby, Dave, and playing with Bounce.

While Kayte plays, Dimmer collects and protects all of his toys :-)
