12/24/04 Update: Callie has found something very interesting to her, SNOW! Here in Colorado we received about 5" of the white stuff on 122104. The moment Callie was let outside she went nuts. She ran around the back yard several times dipping her snout in the snow attempting to eat it. Well, needless to say she had a blast, and we can't get her to come inside. On a more serious note, Callie started having seizures about two months ago. I never in my life had seen anything like that. I immediately took her to the Vet and they ran a battery of tests, all with negative results. The Vet determined she was epileptic, and immediately started her on medication. The medication was working with some relapses, but the Vet said the level of medication would have to be gradually increased until they stop completely. I was reassured by the Vet the seizures cause no damage or have any lasting effects, boy they seem awfully traumatic to me though.  Other than that, Callie is now a year old and weighs 57lbs. Oh by the way, she has taking a liking to my two ferrets Sugar and Snow. Here are some pictures. Ken and Jennifer Matic

8/11/04 Update:  Hello, sorry it has been so long between updates. Callie is growing and growing and growing. She weighs around 40lbs, and is eating me and my wife out of house and home! Callie is one of those "happy" dogs we all wish for, and is always full of energy. She follows each of us around the house wherever we go, such a lover. Callie is very rambunctious and loves to jump on your lap. Thank goodness we have no small children in the home. I am still trying to locate an eye doctor for her somewhat close to where we live. I have some pretty good leads, just need to find the time to follow up on them. I observed Callie following a fly around are house with her eyes, and seemed to have no trouble seeing the small insect, leading me to believe her eyes are OK, but I am not a doctor.... Here are some pictures of her, and one of me with Callie and Bailey. Enjoy, Ken & Jennifer Matic

7/7/04 Update:  Callie just had her second set of shots today and gave everyone at the Vet's Office plenty of kisses. The Vet gave her a clean bill of health. Here are some new pictures of Callie's two favorite activities, sleeping and playing with her new friend "Bailey" our Pomeranian. More updates to follow!

6/21/04 Update:  Skyla has a new name!...Callie.  Callie is doing just great in her new forever home.  Please check back for new pictures.

6/12/04 Update: You may find this a surprise, but me and Jennifer would like to make our home Skyla's forever home. In just these few short days, she has stolen our hearts, and everything just feels right somehow on adopting her.  Me and my wife truly feel Skyla, somehow in her actions and demeanor is telling us "Thanks" for saving her from the shelter.  Thanks, Ken Matic  Please check back soon for new pics and updates!

6/11/04 Update: Here are some new pics of Skyla, as well as a few words from her foster family :-)

Skyla is doing great adapting to her new surroundings. Our three other dogs are still a little bit curious about her, but they're doing fine. Skyla loves to play outside, but does not want to come inside without a little doggy biscuit bribe. Me and my wife (Jennifer) are starting some basic hand signals with Skyla, but the hardest one will be telling her to stay of the couch. Skyla's hearing is impaired, but her little ears will pop up when certain noises are heard. Her eyesight seems to be just fine, and she has very well defined pupils in both eyes. As much as she loves to play outside, Skyla will probably be an indoor dog due to her "pink" nose, and her eye sensitivity to light. A big "hats off" to Cyndi for all her help in bringing this beautiful Aussie into to our home. More pictures and updates to follow!!!!

A special thanks to Ken and Jennifer for all they are doing for Skyla!

6/10/04 Update: Thanks to many wonderful people, Skyla (a deaf Red Merle Lethal) has been rescued from the shelter and is now safely in our foster home in Pueblo, CO.  She was spayed before leaving the shelter and will spend time recovering from surgery and being evaluated (and getting lots of love).  Please check back for updates and new pictures.

Notes:

Skyla is living on borrowed time at the Fremont County Humane Society in Canon City. They keep dogs as long as they can, but sometimes run out of room. Please contact them at (719) 275-0663. The Humane Society is open from 10-5 M-F, and 10-5 on Saturday. Until further notice, they will be closed on Sundays. The Humane Society is great to work with and very willing to do out of town adoptions. However, because of a few people writing checks on closed accounts, they will NO LONGER ACCEPT OUT-OF-TOWN CHECKS. There is an ATM 1/4 mile from the Humane Society if you forget to bring cash. Your understanding is greatly appreciated.

Skyla is a striking, sweet, 6 month old puppy. Sadly, because of her "breeder" mating 2 merle dogs, Skyla is deaf, which is a common result of merle to merle breeding. Because of someone's greed and ignorance, Skyla will spend the rest of her life unable to hear. Many puppies from these breeding are deaf and partially or totally blind. Skyla appears to have normal vision, and she has stunning blue eyes. This is a very sweet, special needs dog. Skyla was dumped at the shelter because "too playful with children". Can you say Puppy? Because of her deafness, it would be best for Skyla to go to a home without small children, as they could easily startle her.
